Decorate a Bar or Rec Room with Barstools, Wine Cabinets and Pub Tables

Decorating a bar or recreation room can be a bigger challenge than the rest of the rooms in your home because often, when decorating this space, you don’t have a real basis for comparison. You may constantly see pictures of living rooms and bedrooms in magazines because these are rooms that everyone has in their home. It’s much less likely that you’ll find popular images of bars and rec rooms in design magazines and catalogs because these rooms aren’t quite as common. That said, it can certainly be done and you don't have to limit yourself to a baker's rack or wine rack. You can have a beautiful bar or rec room by just finding a few signature pieces of furniture like bar and counter stools or bar and wine cabinets.

You have to first decide how you want the overall feel of your bar or rec room to be. Do you want a more old fashioned space, or do you want it to feel more contemporary or even modern? All of these things need to be taken into consideration before you begin looking for any furniture to fill the space.

Chances are the focal point of this room will either be a pub table, or a game table —whether it be poker, pool or foosball—or, in the absence of the table, the focal point of the room will probably be the bar itself. No matter what kind of bar you choose, you’ll want your barstools to fit well with the look of the bar. If your bar has a bit of an antique feel, consider wrought iron barstools for a truly European look. If your bar is a bit more contemporary, you should definitely find a set of contemporary barstools or counter stools to complete the contemporary look. If you want your bar or rec room to feel more modern, go for more modern barstools; you might consider metal counter stools or swivel barstools as well. A swivel barstool is particularly handy if you entertain often, as it will provide the opportunity for your guests to turn and talk to one another. If your bar or rec room looks a bit more old-fashioned, look for a set of wood barstools for a cozy, homemade feel.

In addition to the bar, you may want a bar cabinet or wine cabinet to one side of the room, particularly if you entertain often and like to keep quite a bit of wine or liquor on hand for guests. Bar cabinets and wine cabinets, like a wine rack cabinet, should also match the flow of the bar or rec room; you may even want to match it identically with the bar itself, as many companies will fashion both. Consider having a pub table and chairs or even two sets fill out the space, particularly if there is no game table in the room. This will not only give the room a bit of balance, but provide seating for more guests. Your pub tables don’t have to match the bar, but try to keep dark colors with other dark colors, and light with light. You will want to match your pub table barstools with the tables, and put to or three to each one.

If you have a poker table in the room, contemporary parsons chairs make a great choice for seating around it. Look for a parsons chair that will either contrast with the carpet or fit with the flow of your room. Be sure to match enough of them to fit the spaces denoted on your card table.

Your bar or rec room can actually be the room in your home that is the most fun to design, because your options are limitless. So, don’t dread finding furnishings for this room.  Instead, relish in all of the possibilities, and go a little wild!
